Healthcare Support is one of the core programs of the Dokolo Youth Alliance Project (DYAP), a youth-centered Christian non-profit organization (charity/CBO) based in Dokolo District, Uganda (Lango Sub-Region). It started as a youth group in 2011 and was registered as a Community Based Organization in 2012.

Focus and Objectives

DYAP’s healthcare initiatives target vulnerable youth (aged 12–30), teenage mothers, children, women, and people living with HIV/AIDS in underserved communities. The program addresses key local challenges such as:

  • High HIV infection rates
  • Limited access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for young people living with HIV
  • Tuberculosis (TB) prevention and awareness
  • General health issues in low-resource settings (e.g., maternal/child health, substance abuse impacts, and basic medical access)

The broader mission emphasizes holistic care—meeting physical needs like healthcare alongside education, feeding, and spiritual growth—while empowering beneficiaries for long-term self-reliance.

Key Activities in the Healthcare Support Program

  • Medical Outreaches and Free Health Camps — Organizing community-based events offering free medical check-ups, medication, and minor treatments.
  • Maternal & Child Health Support — Focused assistance for mothers, infants, and children, including basic care and awareness.
  • HIV/AIDS and TB Awareness, Prevention, and Support — Peer education, testing, linkage to care (e.g., ART access), and ongoing support for young people living with HIV (YLWHIV) and affected families. This is a central emphasis given the organization’s youth focus.
  • Mental Health Services — Support through counseling and community outreach.
  • Collaboration and Referrals — Partnering with local health facilities, schools, and other organizations for better service delivery and referrals.
  • Hygiene & Sanitation Integration — Linked efforts to provide clean water and hygiene resources to prevent disease.

Volunteers play a key role, assisting in clinics, outreaches, and mental health support. The program has reportedly contributed to medical care for hundreds of children and women as part of wider efforts reaching over 2,000 families.

Approach and Impact

DYAP uses a community-driven, multifaceted strategy involving awareness creation, peer education, grassroots advocacy, and direct service provision. It benefits primary groups (youth, teenage mothers, children) and secondary ones (households, schools, health facilities, and youth with disabilities). As a faith-based initiative, it integrates Christian discipleship and compassion into its support model.

This program operates alongside others like education support, feeding programs, economic empowerment, and apprenticeships for a comprehensive approach to poverty and health challenges in the region.
